Jan Pini and Anne Trimble will share the four-part video they bought showing the pastel landscape painter Barbara Jaenicke's technique (although this is not necessarily a pastel class). $3 studio fee. After watching the session video, we will do recommended exercises for each session (details for this session below).

    2/20 - Composition
    2/27 - Color Harmony
    3/13 - Color Temperature
    3/21 - Edges and Editing

Composition Exercise (see below for supplies):

Select several of your own reference photos. Squint at them and see which ones can be divided into about five specific large and small shapes. Keep in mind, the best composition may simply be a section of your original photo.

As you squint to reduce it to five shapes, remember you can connect similar-value shapes even if they’re completely different landscape elements. Choose one photo that reduces down to the most eye-appealing five shapes and, if you have the capability, crop it to the best composition on your computer and print it out to approximately a 3” x 4” size.

On a small piece of tracing paper,* draw out a border for a thumbnail sketch that’s proportional to your chosen painting size. A thumbnail size of 3” x 4” will be pretty close for most standard painting sizes, but there are variations. (For example, 3” x 3 ¾” is proportional to 11” x 14” and 3” x 4” is proportional to 9” x 12.”) Mark your centers on each side and place the tracing paper border over the photo.

Draw in the contours of your five shapes, placing a shape and shifting as necessary, making sure to have a variety of large and small shapes. Reference your center marks to be sure nothing gets trapped in the center. Place the shapes first that are already in an ideal spot. Then shift the tracing paper to place the other shapes that may need to be shifted or reduced/enlarged to stay clear of dead center, and to create the most appealing arrangement of those five large and small abstract shapes. Then add the value structure so that you have a variety of dark, medium and light values.

Values should be indicated with flat shading, or when necessary, slight gradation. No form or detail should be indicated in the thumbnail sketch. Try this with several other reference photos to see which ones provide you with the best abstract designs that could serve as a strong foundation for a landscape composition.

    2/20 - Composition
    2/27 - Color Harmony
    3/13 - Color Temperature
    3/21 - Edges and Editing

Color Harmony Exercise (see below for supplies):

Developing (and keeping) a harmonious palette (using pastels)

Work from one of your own landscape reference photos that has a dominant color contrast. Create your thumbnail sketch and underpainting as explained in the lesson.

Select 3-5 pastels that will best represent those more saturated, dominant colors. Then select warmer & cooler, lighter & darker, and greyer versions of those initial colors according to the values, temperature and chroma indicated in your landscape.

Try to keep your total number of pastels less than 20. After you’ve selected your initial color palette, if you have the capability, switch your reference photo to black & white.

Proceed with your painting, choosing additional or alternate pastel selections for your initial palette only when absolutely necessary to make corrections to value, temperature or chroma, referencing only the information you can glean from the black & white version. (Remember, sunlit areas—regardless of the local color—will need warm color temperatures relative to the cooler shadow areas.) As you complete your painting, be sure to repeat variations of existing colors rather than adding more hues.

    2/20 - Composition
    2/27 - Color Harmony
    3/13 - Color Temperature

Color Temperature Exercise (see below for supplies):

    Light illumination and reflections

Choose one of your own reference photos that has a highly reflective lighting situation, such as light and shadow on water or snow, and/or a lower sky that’s illuminating very bright light (ideally late afternoon/early evening light). As I mentioned on the previous page, the lightest areas of reflected or illuminated light will probably lose accurate color information in the photographic process and appear white.

Create your thumbnail sketch and underpainting as explained in the lesson. As you choose some of your initial colors for your palette, select light-value warms such as pinks, peaches and yellows that you’ll use where your photo shows white for those very light, reflective or illuminated areas.

As you choose the rest of your palette, test those chosen colors up against those light-value warms to see if they accurately cause those warms to appear even warmer by surrounding them with cooler color temperatures where necessary.

If your light-value sunlit/illuminated areas still don’t have the glow they should, try adjusting the value slightly darker and/or the chroma more saturated. If your choices for your warms and cools are accurate, your reflected light and/or illuminated sky should appear to have a warm glow effect.

    2/20 - Composition
    2/27 - Color Harmony
    3/13 - Color Temperature
    3/21 - Edges and Editing

Edges & Editing Exercise (see below for supplies):

    Editing leafless trees

Choose one of your own reference photos that has a cluster of leafless trees no closer than middle ground.

Create a thumbnail sketch according to the composition segment using either the tracing paper method or a sketchbook, reducing the composition to about five shapes. Squint hard at your photo and connect similar-value sections of the landscape wherever you can in order to reduce the number of shapes.

Remember to combine the mass of leafless trees into ONE SHAPE (or each mass into one shape if more than one). The initial generalized value you assign for this type of tree mass should be slightly lighter than what you see when you squint. You can allow for dark-to-light gradations within a shape if needed, otherwise each of your shapes should be FLAT VALUES without detail or indication of form. (Squint harder if you’re having trouble with that.)

Using a small size painting surface (such as 8” x 10” ), follow your sketch (not your photo!) to block in your painting with hard pastels in the colors shown in the lesson. Wet down the painting with alcohol, holding a bristle brush (a #8 or #10) fairly loosely toward the end, especially for the leafless tree mass. Use the skinny side of the bristles to apply the alcohol in a loose, drippy manner so that your edges are very vague.

This takes practice! Try several attempts until you become in control of achieving the edges you want. Back up frequently from your painting! Edges that look soft and loose close up, will look stiffer from further back.
