SIGHT AND SOUND

Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries our American musical identity paralleled the development of our painting tradition. Sight and sound weave together in celebration of our national culture.

MARCH 10 - THE COMMON MAN: AN ERA OF CONFIDENCE

The painting George Caleb Bingham and William Sydney Mount parallel the music of Stephen Foster as American culture develops a distinct identity.

APRIL 14 - THE TRIUMPH OF THE VULGAR

The Ragtime sound of Scott Joplin and the bold, gutsy art of Robert Henri, John Sloan, and George Bellows welcome in the new century. American sensibilities will change forever.

MAY 12 - MODERNISM: IN SEARCH OF A NEW AMERICA

Jazz transforms American music in the 20’s and 30’s while the art of Arthur Dove, Georgia O’Keeffe and Stuart Davis enlivens the contemporary art scene.
